“Three men in their 20’s may have watched a few too many movies about sewer-dwelling Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as teens. The men had to be rescued from Sacramento’s sewer system overnight.
Police say three men were walking around the underground sewer system near Florin Road around 1:00 this morning. The men were originally reported to be teens. But it was later clarified that exploring the sewer was something the men had apparently done before when they were teens.
The men got into trouble when they lifted up a manhole cover to try and get out of the sewer. Manhole covers typically weigh more than 100 pounds. A passing car hit the manhole cover back onto the head of one the men.
Firefighters climbed down into the sewer to attend to the injured man and strap him to a rescue board. They then set-up a tri-pod rescue system over the manhole and lifted the injured man out of the sewer with a hook connected to the tri-pod. Many of the rescue crews involved say this type of sewer rescue was a first for them.
“Let’s put it this way, you think you’ve seen it all, then something like this happens. It’s something new everyday,” Sacramento Police Sgt. Eric Forbeck told CBS13 News.
The man hit by the manhole cover was not seriously hurt.”
